Nunukan, August 2, 2010 – PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Tbk. (TELKOM) has established Sebatik Broadband Village at Sebatik Island, District of Nunukan, East Kalimantan. The presence of Sebatik Broadband Village (SBV) in an island having direct border with Sabah, Malaysia, is to provide telecommunication access facility to Sebatik people and also to maintain unity of the Republic of Indonesia.

Vice President Public and Marketing Communication TELKOM, Eddy Kurnia, explained that Sebatik Broadband Village was a design concept to develop the area based on TIME (Telecommunication, Information, Multimedia and Edutainment) as the form of activity of TELKOM CSR involving Local Government, TELKOM and TELKOM Polytechnique.

“Broadband Village has been made, among other thing, as an internet training centre (Broadband Leaning Centre), provision of hotspot at strategic point in the border with Malaysia, and website to empower potential and community knowing internet at Sebatik,” said Eddy Kurnia. Through Sebatik Broadband Village it is expected that awareness of Sebatik community to the use of internet and its utilization will be more well driven particularly in its relation with state border issue.

As explained by Eddy Kurnia, at Sebatik and Nunukan areas, TELKOM has presented some of data and internet communication service, both mobile and static, like Speedy, Flexi, Cellular through TELKOMSEL having various features and Value Added Service. The service is information technology able to support information and technology at Sebatik.

Sebatik Broadband Village is also prepared to serve educational need and establish community knowing internet in border area of Indonesia (East Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah). SBV consists of 3 key parts, first is Sebatik Broadband Centre (learning centre and information centre ralated to ICT and TELKOM service), Sebatik Broadband Area (area points able to use by the community to use internet), secondly, Sebatik for Wireless Internet Access, and thirdly, Sebatik of Internet Knowing, that is, website designed to form community having ICT paradigm and at the same time as information centre at Sebatik area as border territory.

Through TIME (Telecommunication, Informationm, Multimedia and Edutainment) from TELKOM, Sebatik can be made as a broadbad village in improving value and as a form of TELKOM CSR, so that is is expected that all Sebatik community will know internet, even in the future there will other services like Mojopia (plasa.com), Pesona Edu, a facility to the trading and trading activity on web, so that the trade and economy of Sebatik society will also be improved.

Design Concept of Broadband Village based on Broadband Speedy service as an infrastructure is a foundation to implement three key packages of Sebatik Broadband Village design, and with Speedy service, the community’s need about internet service for seeking information/news, messaging (e-mail, chatting), social networking (facebook, twitter), transaction (e-banking, e-commerce) and edutainment (educational and entertainment contents) at border territory can be solved.

Website-based online application in Indonesia has been developed, both simple application and application for particular need. Those applications are among others e-mail, chatting, blog, social network (facebook, friendster, twitter), e-banking, e-commerce, corporate portal, cybernews (detik.com, kompas.com) and other applications.

All of the applications gives facility and up-to-date information to users unlimited even in border line with another country to the extent the users are connected to global internet. Any information about development of the Republic of Indonesia from economy, trade even infotainment can be known by interner access.

Frontline of RI Island
Sebatik is a Sub-dictrict of Nunukan District, East Kalimantan. This sub-district is located at Sebatik Island, end of northeast of Nunukan District. Sebatik Island itself is an island divided into 2 territorial areas, Indonesia (East Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah).

Sebatik Sub-district being part of the RI consists of four villages (Tanjung Karang, Tanjung Aru, Pancang, and Sei Nyamuk) with population at 20,283 people and becomes the sub-district having highest population density in Nunukan District. This area has main potential in agriculture, plantation, and fishery.

The area also produces rice, banana, cacao, fish and shrimp. Aside from natural potentials in agriculture, plantation and fishery, Sebatik Sub-district has also potential in tourism like Batu Lumampu Coast with sea panorama facing Ambalat Block with long and pleasant coast line. As a sub-district located at the border and the Local Government at Tanjung Karang Village and center of economy at Sei Nyamuk Village, surely the information and telecommunication need becomes primary need and obliged to be provided to support economy and government activity.

Sebatik which is also part of Indonesia surely needs such information. Problems always occurred related to the need fulfillment is provision of facility and infrastructure to access the community in the border and a guideline to utilize information contents so that the utilization is in line with function and existence of such facility/infrastructure/contents. TELKOM as the only BUMN engaged in the field of telecommunication has Corporate Social Responsibility in supporting information and telecommunication need of Indonesian community as a whole.
