Jakarta, 28 October 2021 – In a quest for equitable connectivity across Indonesia and realization of digital environment, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) through its subsidiary, PT Telkom Satellite Indonesia (Telkomsat), signed a cooperation agreement with Thales Alenia Space to develop a High Throughput Satellite (HTS) in 113 east longitude orbital slot. The HTS construction will use C-Band/Ku-Band frequencies with a wider range and reliable quality.
President Director of Telkomsat, Endi Fitri Herlianto and the President & CEO of Thales Alenia Space, Hervé Derrey signed the cooperation agreement online from their respective locations on Thursday (28/10). Also present to witness, the commissioners and senior leaders of Telkomsat as well as several representatives from Thales Alenia Space.
This signing coincided with the 93rd commemoration of the annual Youth Pledge on 28 October. Celebrating the same spirit, the HTS 113 East Longitude Satellite is a manifestation of a unified Indonesian archipelago and is connecting more and more Indonesian people, in order to make digital sovereignty a reality.
Telkomsat appointed Thales Alenia Space as the trusted main contractor responsible for the satellite design, construction, testing, and delivery. Moreover, Thales Alenia Space is also responsible for the early orbital positioning phase (LEOP) and in-orbit tests (IOT). Thales Alenia Space will fully support ground control and will train the Telkomsat engineer team during this cooperation agreement. Thales Alenia Space will also provide other supports throughout the satellite lifespan.
Telkom Enterprise & Business Service Director Edi Witjara said “TelkomGroup remains committed to providing digital connectivity, platforms and services for all Indonesians. The HTS 113 East Longitude satellite, which is strategically positioned above the central part of Indonesia, will further strengthen Indonesia’s digital connectivity infrastructure and complement our terrestrial infrastructure and submarine cables.”
President Director of Telkomsat Endi Fitri Herlianto concurred with Edi Witjara, adding, "The HTS 113 East Longitude satellite will help strengthen the capacity, quality and capability of digital connectivity in Indonesia, especially in areas that are off the grid and has a lack terrestrial networks. Hopefully it can support the realization of Indonesia's digital sovereignty."
President & CEO of Thales Alenia Space, Hervé Derrey, welcomed the cooperation and expressed his appreciation to Telkomsat for entrusting Thales Alenia Space as the HTS manufacturer.
“We are very proud to be able to support customer business development, in this case Telkom’s, after previously [developing] the Telkom-3S Satellite. The HTS 113 East Longitude satellite deployment will provide a very secure broadband satellite capacity for Telkomsat throughout Indonesia. HTS 113 East Longitude is our fourth telecommunication program for Indonesian satellite operators, which confirms that Thales Alenia Space is able to meet the needs of its customers by offering a wide range of telecommunication satellite products,” Hervé Derrey said.
The HTS 113 East Longitude will be developed on the Spacebus 4000B2 platform and it will have more than 32 Gbps capacity provided throughout Indonesia. The satellite will weigh about 4 tons at launch and have a service life of up to 15 years.
The presence of HTS in the 113 east longitude orbital slot will complement the functions of other satellites that Telkomsat owns to serve domestic communication needs. The satellite will be equipped with a technology that can provide broadband internet services with a much larger capacity than the conventional satellites currently available in Indonesia.
