Restore the Sea, Protect Life: Telkom Indonesia Rehabilitates Coral Reefs in Central Maluku

The Indonesian sea is not only a natural resource but also the heart of life that supports millions of coastal communities. However, behind its beauty, Indonesia’s marine ecosystem faces grave threats. According to LIPI data from 2017, only 6.39% of Indonesia’s coral reefs are in very good condition, while human activities and climate change have damaged the majority. This condition continues to worsen year by year, demanding concrete action to save the underwater ecosystem that supports thousands of marine species.

As part of its commitment to marine ecosystem sustainability, Telkom Indonesia carried out a coral reef rehabilitation program in Morella Village, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, on September 17, 2025. Through this initiative, Telkom aims to restore damaged marine areas and raise community awareness of the importance of preserving aquatic life for future generations.

In the program, Telkom Indonesia, together with local communities and stakeholders, planted 100 spider-web structures as growth media for 2,000 coral seedlings. These seedlings will be monitored for 3–4 months until they grow into healthy, strong corals. This effort is expected to help restore marine habitats, strengthen coastal ecosystems, and create long-term economic value for local communities that depend on aquatic resources.

Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom Indonesia, stated, “Coral reef conservation efforts cannot be done alone. It requires collaboration among multiple parties to achieve sustainable, tangible results. As a leading digital company, Telkom Indonesia is committed to providing concrete support in coral reef rehabilitation programs in Central Maluku. We believe that technology and cross-sector collaboration can strengthen the effectiveness of these initiatives, allowing coral reefs to recover and provide both ecological and economic benefits for the community.”

This program is part of Telkom Indonesia’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) initiative, which focuses on environmental conservation and community empowerment. Besides restoring marine ecosystems, the program also supports achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Through sustainable actions such as coral reef rehabilitation, Telkom Indonesia demonstrates its commitment to preserving Indonesia’s natural wealth for the benefit of current and future generations.
