Jakarta, March 30, 2026 – PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) continues to strengthen collaboration and engagement with communities and youth in various environmental conservation initiatives. One of these efforts is realized through the Bumi Berseru Fest program, which promotes community-based solutions to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability, including proboscis monkey conservation and mangrove planting initiatives in Tarakan City, North Kalimantan.
Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom, Hery Susanto, emphasized that collaboration with communities is a key element in achieving sustainable environmental conservation. “Preserving the environment requires the involvement of multiple stakeholders, including young generations who bring strong awareness and innovative ideas. Through Bumi Berseru Fest, Telkom aims to create a collaborative space for communities to deliver real solutions in protecting ecosystems while raising public awareness about environmental conservation,” he stated.
One initiative from Bumi Berseru Fest 2025 is implemented by the Association of Youth for Sustainability (AYS) Indonesia in Tarakan. Driven by concerns about the declining mangrove ecosystem due to land conversion, habitat degradation, and low public awareness, the community initiated a conservation program to protect the proboscis monkey—an endemic species of Kalimantan—while maintaining coastal ecosystem balance.
Through an integrated approach, the program introduced several strategic actions. On December 19–21, 2025, AYS and TelkomGroup volunteers built a Feeding Spot Center, a designated area providing supplemental nutrition (bananas) for proboscis monkeys, while also serving as an educational site for visitors to learn without disturbing their natural habitat. Subsequently, on January 24, 2026, the team planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings in Edu Park Kampung Empat to strengthen coastal green belts and mitigate habitat degradation.
Beyond conservation activities, the program incorporates scientific monitoring. Observations conducted on January 7, 2026, identified 40 proboscis monkeys and mapped 27 mangrove species in the area. Findings also revealed unique behavioral patterns—proboscis monkeys tend to be individualistic but form groups when facing threats. This data is used to develop an educational website that serves as a digital database for the public and supports local government conservation efforts.
Founder of AYS Indonesia, M. Abrar Putra Siregar, expressed appreciation for Telkom’s support. “We truly appreciate Telkom, as only a few stakeholders give serious attention to this issue. BBF is highly effective and strategic because it involves local communities who understand real environmental conditions,” he said.
This conservation initiative aligns with Telkom’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation through the GoZero – Sustainability Action by Telkom Indonesia program, particularly under the Environment pillar, Save Our Planet, focusing on biodiversity preservation and ecosystem protection. It also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
Looking ahead, mangrove rehabilitation in North Kalimantan is expected to expand further to mitigate increasing coastal abrasion. Through collaboration among communities, stakeholders, and society, this local initiative is expected to grow into a broader conservation movement to safeguard coastal ecosystems for future generations.
Bumi Berseru Fest 2025 itself is an environmental innovation competition that encourages the public to create sustainable solutions. This year, the competition includes categories such as Eco Product and Green Technology, providing funding and mentorship for impactful environmental ideas.
