Indonesia, one of the countries with the greatest natural wealth in the world, possesses biodiversity and natural resources that play a vital role in maintaining the global ecosystem's balance. However, behind this beauty, our environment faces severe pressure from deforestation, coastal ecosystem degradation, plastic pollution, and the impacts of climate change. According to data published by Mongabay, deforestation in 2024 reached 261,575 hectares, with 97% of the area occurring legally in concession areas, including plantations and mines, thereby threatening critical wildlife habitats. The World Economic Forum in 2024 reported that Indonesia, which holds around 16–18% of the world’s coral reefs, is projected to experience annual bleaching in more than 50% of its marine protected areas by 2044.
In response to these environmental issues, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk consistently contributes to efforts to conserve and protect biodiversity, as well as the environment.
Throughout 2025, Telkom Indonesia has planted 61,800 tree seedlings, 90,900 mangrove seedlings, and 760 coral seedlings across Indonesia.
Telkom Indonesia collaborates with communities and the public to implement conservation programs that protect biodiversity in shrinking habitats. These programs focus on conserving medicinal plants, wild orchids, endemic trees, and seagrass for flora, as well as protecting fauna such as sea turtles and the Bawean warty pig.
“As a state-owned enterprise and the largest telecommunications and digital company in Indonesia, Telkom Indonesia has a responsibility for environmental sustainability as well as innovation, combining conservation with digital technology advancement to monitor the progress of programs being carried out,” said Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom.
“Not only by leveraging technology, but protecting and preserving the environment and biodiversity is also a shared responsibility that must be carried out through collaboration with communities. This is necessary to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations,” he added.
The efforts made by Telkom Indonesia are part of the company’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13 on Climate Action, Goal 14 on Life Below Water, and Goal 15 on Life on Land.
Through these concrete steps, Telkom Indonesia demonstrates that environmental preservation is an integral part of the company’s strategy to build a sustainable future. By integrating technology, collaboration, and collective awareness, Telkom not only safeguards Indonesia’s natural heritage but also creates shared value for society, the environment, and future generations.
