Telkom Indonesia Strengthens Coastal Conservation Through Mangrove Planting Action by Top Volunteer Teams in Semarang

Semarang – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in 2025 reported that over the past decade, mangrove land cover along Semarang's coast has significantly declined. This condition poses a serious threat to mangrove ecosystems' ecological functions, both as natural coastal protection and as blue carbon storage. The phenomenon raises concerns about increased risks of coastal abrasion and the loss of marine habitats, underscoring the urgency of cross-sector collaboration for sustainable coastal ecosystem restoration.

As a concrete commitment to environmental preservation and corporate social responsibility, Telkom Indonesia launched the AYO BERAKSI program. This program is a volunteer competition that encourages active participation by Telkom employees in delivering tangible solutions to social and environmental challenges. After a series of selection stages, five “Best of the Best” teams were chosen.

The five winning teams were AiDareU, INOVAKSI, Green Drop, MAKE Impact, and BATUMBUAH. The activity took place at the Semarang Mangrove Center (SMC) from February 11–13, 2026. The selection of Semarang as the primary location was a direct response to the degradation of mangrove land, which requires intensive management through collective planting actions and conservation education.

A total of 13 volunteers from the selected teams participated in the three-day program. The activities included mangrove seedling planting, educational sessions with elementary school students on literacy and environmental awareness, and batik dyeing using mangrove-based natural dyes to reduce waste around SMC. The presence of these top teams reflects Telkom employees’ enthusiasm for integrating innovation with ecological responsibility, and also serves as recognition of their dedication to previous social programs.

“As a national digital company, Telkom Indonesia not only focuses on strengthening services and technological transformation but is also committed to delivering tangible environmental contributions. Through this Voluntrip in Semarang, Telkom hopes the mangrove planting initiative will directly contribute to mitigating climate change impacts and protecting coastlines from abrasion. This action reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining ecological balance and strengthening awareness of the importance of preserving blue carbon ecosystems for a better future,” said Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom.

As part of its sustainability commitment, Telkom Indonesia continues to strengthen the implementation of its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 13: Climate Action and 14: Life Below Water. Telkom strives to lead environmental philanthropy initiatives, support national efforts to restore coastal ecosystems, and deliver tangible contributions that enhance environmental resilience for future generations.
