JAKARTA, July 7, 2026 – The condition of marine ecosystems in several regions of Indonesia currently demands urgent attention. Based on 2025 Mongabay data, coral reef cover on Buru Island, Maluku, is dominated by the "poor" category, averaging only 24.79% under the Decree of the Minister of Environment (Kepmen LH) No. 4 of 2001. This decline in ecosystem quality threatens marine biodiversity and the welfare of coastal communities that depend on it, necessitating massive and collaborative recovery efforts. The spirit of "Bersama Telkom Jadi Bisa" (Together with Telkom We Can) is now being realized as a concrete solution to address these marine sustainability challenges.
Responding to these environmental challenges, TelkomGroup has launched a strategic initiative through its environmental pillar, "Bisa Lestari." Under this pillar, Telkom introduces "Bisa Biru," a program dedicated to restoring coastal and marine ecosystems in Indonesia. Carrying the spirit of "Bersama Jadi Bisa," this initiative drives underwater ecosystem recovery and represents Telkom's contribution to supporting and improving the quality of national marine conservation areas for a sustainable future.
As a form of concrete action, the "Bisa Biru" program was carried out on Buru Island, Maluku, from June 3–10, 2026, coinciding with the celebration of World Oceans Day under the theme "Ibu Karang: Coral Reefs Restoration & Beyond." During its implementation, Telkom deployed 50 substrates as new planting media and transplanted 2,500 sustainable coral reef fragments, followed by periodic data collection and research. In addition to physical underwater restoration, the program addressed social aspects by empowering coastal women as "Ibu Karang" (Coral Mothers) and supported interactive discussion sessions on the importance of coral reef ecosystem conservation with the local community.
"As a digital company, Telkom also focuses on environmental sustainability. This coral reef restoration on Buru Island is Telkom's strategic step to address the critical condition of the region's marine ecosystem. Through the 'Bisa Biru' program, Telkom not only focuses on restoring the physical underwater environment but also building the independence of the local community. By involving women's groups as 'Ibu Karang,' Telkom wants to ensure that the spirit of 'Bersama Jadi Bisa' to protect the ocean can take deep root within families and coastal communities, so that its impact can be felt sustainably by future generations," said Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom Indonesia.
This restoration program is a concrete implementation of TelkomGroup's Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER), which is fully committed to sustainable business principles. Through this conservation action on Buru Island, Telkom actively supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), by empowering coastal women.
