Manado, 21 July 2022 - PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) adds another international communication gateway to its portfolio. Telkom through its subsidiary PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin) launched the new gateway in Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi on Wednesday (20/7) at its North Maluku-North Sulawesi regional office in the city. Mayor of Manado, Andrei Angouw, Telkom President Commissioner Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Telkom Independent Commissioner Wawan Iriawan, Telkom Wholesale and International Service Director Bogi Witjaksono, Telkom Network and IT Solution Director Herlan Wijanarko, Telin President Director Budi Satria Dharma Purba, and TelkomGroup's senior leadership were in attendance at the launch.

The Manado gateway is the second international communication gateway that TelkomGroup has. The digital toll gate is a result of efforts to evenly distribute access to telecommunications and information across Indonesia. The route from Manado is an alternative route for the international communication traffic distribution, which was previously concentrated in Batam. Concentrating all communication routes to and from Indonesia only Batam poses a potential risk to service disruption triggered by natural disasters or other marine activities.

Mayor of Manado Andrei Angouw said he appreciated the launch of the Manado international communication gateway by Telkom and Telin. "Having the Manado gateway here is like having a digital toll road passing through our city. I am certain it would boost the greater Manado area economy. We hope that this infrastructure would stimulate rapid growth in Manado and major companies would be interested in investing in the city. We hope this infrastructure network can support economic growth and improve the community's welfare."

TelkomGroup in 2017 initiated the construction of the SEA-US and IGG Sea Cable Communication System, which connects Indonesia to America. This route passes through Indonesian waters and the Pacific sea as an alternative route and to secure cable routes to America, since routes that generally pass through the Luzon Strait and the South China Sea are frequently severed due to underwater earthquakes. In 2021, Telin also joined the Bifrost Cable System consortium with Meta/Facebook and Keppel to strengthen the position of Manado's gateway infrastructure. In the future, this gate will be connected to a number of international submarine cable communication systems so that telecommunication traffic passing through Manado will be the same as Batam.

Having Manado as the second gateway for international communication is expected to enable equal access to information throughout Indonesia by 2025, given that previously, connectivity in Indonesian waters was only concentrated in the western region of Indonesia. Moreover, it will also greatly improve the quality and reliability of telecommunications services to and from Indonesia.

Telkom Wholesale and International Service Telkom Bogi Witjaksono said, "Manado, as a communication traffic gateway from global connectivity in Indonesia, will serve as a diversity route from Batam and could stimulate economic growth in eastern Indonesia. Having the connectivity route in Manado will open opportunities for digital businesses such as data centers, trigger emergence of start-ups, and the infrastructure business cable landing, which would contribute to local revenue.”

Telin CEO Budi Satria Dharma Purba said, "In addition to encouraging equal distribution of economic infrastructure throughout Indonesia, Manado's international communication gateway also opens up good opportunities to make Manado a connectivity hub for the surrounding regions and strengthen Telin's position as a leading regional operator. Currently, TelkomGroup through Telin is also undertaking an initiative with regional operators to build an submarine cable system that connects Manado with intra-Asian countries such as Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore. The Manado initiative as a gateway for the second international communication channel is in line with Telin's vision, namely Digital Infrastructure and Platform Partner of Choice for Enterprise and Hyperscaler Growth in Asia-Pacific.”

The Manado international communication gateway is expected to accelerate Indonesia's digital ecosystem growth for the realization of national digital sovereignty, especially in eastern Indonesia, and to support the successful development of the new national capital Nusantara.
